Indigenous Knowledge to improve emergency preparedness and response

An Indigenous Knowledge Exchange Session with EPPR: Mobilizing Indigenous Knowledge (IK) to Improve Understanding of Arctic Change and Operationalization of Emergency Preparedness and Response in the Circumpolar Arctic. The objective of this project is to increase familiarity and develop a collective understanding of how Indigenous Knowledge can be mobilized to improve understanding of change in the Arctic, and further operationalized for emergency preparedness and response in the circumpolar Arctic.

Knowledge Mobilization sessions are intended to:

1. Provide EPPR experts a common/baseline understanding of what Indigenous Knowledge (IK) is including:
a. Guidance from the Ethical and Equitable Engagement as a foundation for the session.
i. Understanding IK
ii. Indigenous management approaches
iii. Understanding co-production of knowledge
iv. Engagement with knowledge holders
b. Assess areas where EPPR activities (pollution prevention and SAR) should and can be informed through IK.
i. Traditional place names
ii. Inuit Survival techniques and knowledge
iii. Ice safety, ice movements
iv. Weather
v. Wind/water currents and marine hazards

2. Provide case studies of co-production of knowledge in Arctic Council and other international forums to lend understanding to the concept

3. Identify possible areas of mobilization of IK to enhance and support implementation of the EPPR mandate and workplan.
a. Identify areas IK can be mobilized to mitigate potential risks and inform response measures.
4. Identify areas of combination/fusion of IK and other knowledge/data sources to enhance community engagement in EPPR mandate.
5. Introduce Inuit youth to EPPR activities and how IK can inform EPPR activities.
