Prevention, Preparedness and Response in Small Communities

Better Understanding of Preparedness and Risk Exposure in Small and Remote Communities

Prevention, Preparedness and Response in Small Communities project phase I was approved in June 2015, with Norway, U.S., Canada and AIA as project leads. Community self-assessment tool was developed to gather information and to help EPPR better understand preparedness and risk exposure in small communities. Through the tool a database of survey responses was generated. The database, an interactive map including the data gathered and a resource guide, and a fact sheet were submitted and approved as Ministerial deliverables in 2017, with three main outcomes:

  1. Greater awareness of risk and preparedness at a local level and access to best practices
  2. The ability for national governments to address misperception or lack of awareness
  3. The identification of gaps in preparedness relative to risk

Finding Meaningful Ways to Engage

After the baseline work during the first phase, phase II of the project was approved in June 2017, with a focus on information distribution and raising awareness within communities to encourage improved planning and readiness. The outcome of the phase II was an informational animation film concentrating on preparedness and response in small communities. The video is build of six short blocks focusing on different PPR themes, the form thus facilitating outreach activities. The video was a deliverable at the Ministerial meeting in Rovaniemi in 2019.
